Technology Incentives Awarded to Students
LITTLE ROCK,
AR (April 26, 2007) -- The Arkansas Committed to Education Foundation (ACTEF) announced the awarding of technology-based incentives to qualifying students across the state. Students receiving the program incentives made a proficient score on the math and literacy portions of the Arkansas ACCTAP benchmark exams taken in the sixth grade and had a 95 percent attendance record from the second through sixth grades. Qualifying students also attended Arkansas Public Schools for three complete years ending with their 6th grade year at a school registered in the "License to Learn" program..
"The goal of the Foundation is to motivate public school elementary children to maximize their academic potential. Our hope is to also assist in bridging the technology divide by giving students the opportunity to earn a technological-based incentive." said Guy Wade, Foundation President.
Established in 2001 as a non-profit organization, ACTEF initiated the "License To Learn" program in Fall 2001. Legislation was passed in March 2001 to create a special license plate. There are now two 'Committed to Education' license plate designs. The fee for 'Committed to Education' license plates is $35 annually, of which $25 goes to the Foundation. Proceeds from license plate sales are used to fund technology-based incentives for qualifying elementary age students.
"The future of our children and our state will benefit greatly from the success of the Committed to Education program," said Dr. Diana Julian, Assistant Commissioner, Arkansas Department of Education. "There is no other program in the state that rewards elementary students for excellent academic performance in such a tangible way." There are currently over 36,000 students from 264 schools across Arkansas participating in the program.
In addition to the Arkansas Department of Education, the Committed to Education Foundation receives valuable support from sponsor partnerships with many businesses and foundations in Arkansas. These include: Entergy, Texas Instruments, Environmental and Spatial Technology Labs (EAST), Arkansas Digital Systems, Parrish Delivery Services, Information Network Arkansas/Arkansas.gov, the Walton Foundation, and the Coulson Foundation.
