Student Program Criteria

You may obtain a copy of the following Program Guidelines by clicking here for a .pdf file or click here for a Word document.

2007-08 class will be the third class to receive awards in 2008 school year. Students must have attended Arkansas public schools for at least three (3) complete school years ending with the 6th grade year at a registered school to be eligible for this program.

Attendance Criteria:  Must have 95% attendance from 2nd grade through 6th grade.

Click here for an Attendance Worksheet.

Calculation after each year:
  1. Determine total number of school days attended for years in program.*
  2. Divide number derived in "a" by total number of school days for years in program to determine percentage attendance.

  3. Example: At the end of Sara's 4th Grade Year, Sara missed a total of 18.5 days in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. The total number of required school days for the three years is 534. So Sara attended school for 515.5 days. Therefore 515.5/534 is 96%. Sara meets the attendance criteria. A new calculation would be made following the 5th grade year.

*Note: Data used to calculate qualifying attendance percentage must be based on each school district's required number of school days. Even though schools as a matter of convenience may provide annual recognition for attendance achievement for this program prior to the formal end of school; this recognition does not guarantee students have actually met the program qualifications. This fact is because in most cases there are still required school days following school recognition ceremonies that must be included in the final calculations.

TRANSFERS: Transfer students within a district, state, the U.S. or internationally may participate in this program as long as the students have attended Arkansas public schools for three years and attendance data is kept in individual students records for the program years. Students must have attendance records for all five years to be eligible. Specifically, attendance data is defined as number of school days missed and total number of required school days. Even though among districts, states, etc., total required school days may differ, for attendance calculations this data must be used as required. For example, Sara attended school in Texas in 2nd grade. The required number of school days is 182 (in Arkansas it is 178). That number, 182, must be used for 2nd Grade year calculation.

    EXEMPTIONS:
Medical: Should a child miss school for an extended length of time for excused, medical reasons then an exemption to the criteria will be honored. The student would still be eligible for the program. The child's family has the option to obtain a document signed and dated by a physician OR a document signed by the school nurse. Either document must accompany the reporting data submitted by the school. Suggested Physician's Statement on Letterhead: 'Student Name' missed______days of school (List dates: ) due to medical reasons. Sign & Date. Suggested School Nurse's Statement on School Letterhead: After reviewing medical records of 'Student Name', I verify that 'student name' missed _____days of school (List dates:      ) due to medical reasons. Sign & Date.
